Maths

Exam board – AQA (tbc)
Entry Requirement – GCSE Grade 6 or above in Mathematics

Who Should I contact for more information – Miss Alexander, Mrs Devine or Mr Jones

What does this Course lead to?
Mathematics graduates have jobs in accounting and finance, business, medicine, engineering, forensic science, teaching, research, IT, programming, Web and games development, forecasting, design and construction, space sciences and many other disciplines. According to the Russell Group (who represent the UK’s best 24 universities), “Maths is a ‘facilitating’ subject, which means that it will help you to study lots of other subjects and pursue lots of different careers”. Mathematics teaches you how to think; employers like that! It opens a lot of doors, people with Maths degrees can usually walk into any profession they want.

What will I study

You will study three different areas of pure and applied mathematics. The majority of the course is pure mathematics, and the rest is mechanics and statistics. These applied topics link with A-Levels in physics, biology and psychology.

Pure Topics
Proof, Algebra & Functions, Coordinate Geometry, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Differentiation, Integration, Numerical Methods

Mechanics Topics
Quantities and Units, Kinematics, Forces & Newton’s Laws, Moments

Statistics Topics
Statistical Sampling, Data presentation & Interpretation, Probability, Statistical Distributions, Hypothesis Testing

What are the benefits of studying this course and what will I gain from it?

Mathematics A-Level is a rewarding and satisfying subject for those who love to solve problems, have a passion for maths and want to complement other A-Levels as it combines well with most other subjects.

Maths will help you develop scientific and mechanical skills in order to solve abstract problems. It is one of the best subjects to develop your logical reasoning and problem solving skills so you can confidently deal with project and budget management. It can even teach you the skills needed for effectively debating!

How will I be assessed

All students will be assessed on their knowledge of pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics. As in GCSE there is a large emphasis on modelling, problem-solving and reasoning. Some questions will link different aspects of the course. There is no coursework.

We regularly test students every term using past exam papers. Students are expected to achieve at least 60% (approximately grade C) to pass. Resits will be available but students who continually fail these tests are in danger of jeopardising their place on the course.
